The McLean Madrigals is a group of elite artist-level singers. They practice diligently outside of school to learn their music, and can spend up to five or more sessions per week practicing. The Madrigals started rehearsing this past summer at a choral retreat where they spent three days learning the pieces for the up coming year.
The Madrigals, in existence for fifty years, is an elite ensemble of artist-level singers that have been recognized in many newspapers in the area for their unique Boars Head Feast - done entirely in medieval food, fare and language. In the past nine years, the Madrigals has participated in many choral competitions placing second and first in Eastern United States divisions, first in three national competitions, and first in the International Choral Competition held in Quebec City 2000. Their repertoire includes madrigals and sacred songs from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries, as well as opera choruses, Faure's Requiem, the Rutter Gloria, Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols and Rejoice in the Lamb, Handels' Messiah, Orff's Carmina Burana, Vivaldi's Gloria, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, and Requiem by Maurice Durufle.
McLean Madrigals rehearse every other morning from 6:20-7:15 am, and every Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm. It is expected that the ensemble will be each member's primary after-school activity, since rehearsals and performances outside of school will be frequent. The Madrigal singers will represent the McLean Choral Department to the community at large, and will travel more frequently to perform than other ensembles. In addition to Choral Department concerts, District Festivals, competitions, and end-of-the year events, the Madrigals will perform at receptions, seasonal events, and special occasions.
Members are expected to prepare thoroughly and audition for all district and state events for which they are eligible. Members are expected to study outside of school with a private teacher. If this is not financially feasible, the student may ask the director for assistance. If any student must leave the ensemble during the year for any reason, an alternate will be selected by the director from another choir roster and asked to fill the vacancy as soon as possible. Auditions for the vacancy may be held if the director deems it necessary.
